1. Submitted abstracts are being considered for poster presentation only.
2. All abstracts must be received electronically by 11:59 PM EST, Friday, January 17, 2025.
3. At the time of your abstract submission, you do not need to be a registered attendee of the 2025 International Firefighter Cancer Symposium. However, if your abstract is accepted for poster presentation, the presenting author must register to attend in person.
4. Abstracts submitted and accepted for the symposium may not be presented at any other meeting/conference/symposium or published prior to February 20, 2025.
5. Presenters must notify Dr. Maria Montoya of the symposium planning committee at mfm224@miami.edu or firefighterstudy@miami.edu of cancellation prior to the commencement of the symposium on February 20, 2025.
6. Limit the abstract to 300 words in length.
7. Include author names and include the presenting/lead author's name first. Only one author can be identified as the presenter. When using abbreviations, spell out the name in full at the first mention and follow with the abbreviation in parenthesis.
8. An author may not present more than three abstracts during the 2025 International Firefighter Cancer Symposium. Each abstract must be different.
9. Organize your abstract into four sections: Background and Objective(s), Methods, Results, Conclusion(s). We understand that you may not have results at the time of submission; if not, please include preliminary results or expected outcomes.
Suggestion:
Questions to consider when addressing each component of an abstract (University of California, Berkeley, 2000):
Background: Why do we care about the problem? What public health need is your work addressing? In what way does the work present something new to the field of global health?
Methods: What did you actually do to get your results (e.g., conducted a survey of three villages, analyzed household survey data from five countries, held semi-structured interviews with 17 community health workers)? Be specific.
Results: What did you learn? Was there enhanced knowledge, increased participation, or measurable changes in health outcomes?
Conclusions: What are the larger implications of your findings, especially for the need initially identified?
10. All abstracts must be prepared in plain text, in English, with no embedded symbols or formatting characters. Please spell out the symbols (alpha, beta, microns, picomolar, etc.) or translate them (mean, chi square, etc.) in your abstract submission. Submission may not include charts, graphs, tables, or references. Only abstracts submitted on the proper form will be considered.
11. If you are using materials that are not your original work, remember to cite the original source. If you are drawing heavily on another source, it is your responsibility to seek permission from the original source to use the material.
12. Proofread your abstract submission. If accepted, your author-prepared abstract will be published exactly as it appears on your electronic submission. (No edits/changes after deadline on January 17, 2025 will be accepted).
13. Ensure your abstract(s) reveal all sources of funding for the work described. Abstracts cannot be submitted without funding information.
14. All accepted abstracts will be presented as posters.
15. Each presenting author will receive an email confirmation from the submission system within 48 hours of abstract submission. Please keep a copy of this confirmation email for any abstract editing until the abstract submission deadline January 17, 2025. If you have not received an emailed receipt confirmation within two (2) working days, please notify Dr. Maria montoya at mfm224@miami.edu or telephone: 305-243-2360.
