Please note that large requests for clinical samples will be reviewed by our DPLM Adjudication Committee for Clinical Oversight of Research Data & samples (DACCORD). In that instance, the PI and study coordinator will be notified via email.

Pathologists are assigned to review clinical samples as part of our departmental best practices as all samples used for research must be reviewed before they are released. Your study needs will determine if you need a pathologist on your project. If you do, the DPLM research team will then contact you and inquire about the study to determine if any effort is needed.

DPLM policy dictates that all tissue and/or specimens being collected for research must go to Pathology for proper processing and/or documentation.

Research only biopsies for clinical trials are allowed to bypass this rule only if the OR requisition form is submitted along with the patient's signed consent form.

The OR form must state that research will be taking the entire specimen and the person collecting the sample will print their name, sign, and date the requisition. The requisition will be retained in the lab and saved for the department's records.

Please contact Myra Raffaele, Director of Laboratory Services (mxr1661@med.miami.edu) before scheduling the patient for the research biopsy to ensure that the sample can be realeased to the research team.

Clinical Samples are samples from UHealth patients collected for clinical care purposes. The use of clinical samples is monitored by the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine.

Large clinical samples and tissue microarrays requests for research require 2 approvals from DPLM: (1) PAC and (2) DACCORD.

Please note that it is the policy of the DPLM to not release FFPE blocks directly to research investigators. All research blocks are processed by the Translational Research Histology Laboratory.

Research repositories, such as the BSSR, are not considered DPLM clinical samples and we do not manage access to their samples.

Research laboratory services includes all clinical CPT codes used in Pathology Medicine as well as processing and shipping services. Also included are research phlebotomy and customized assays.

All these services are provided by the Laboratory for Clinical Biosciences (LCB), a core research facility in the department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine.
