Thank you for your interest in the Virtual Reality research study at the Child and Adolescent Mood and Anxiety Treatment Program (CAMAT) at the University of Miami.
The purpose of this study is to examine the effectiveness of virtual reality (VR) delivered exposure therapy for youth ages 8 to 16 with phobias or social anxiety, with and without autism spectrum disorder who reside in Miami-Dade County. We are also interested in collecting information to better understand phobias and social anxiety.
If your child is eligible to continue with this research study after an initial evaluation, and you choose to allow them to participate, your child will be offered virtual reality (VR)-delivered exposure therapy at our program. VR is a type of technology that allows people to immerse themselves in an experience by wearing a headset. In this study, we are using VR to help children practice gradually approaching things that cause anxiety. The program includes children wearing the headset and engaging in planned practices to gradually approach anxiety-provoking stimuli. This program also includes psychoeducation about anxiety/phobias and their maintenance, youth strategies for tolerating distress, and parent strategies for reducing accommodation of anxiety.
Sessions will take place in person at the University of Miami campus in Coral Gables, Florida. Each intervention session will last approximately 50 minutes long. You will be offered up to 10 sessions, one per week. You may choose to discontinue your participation at any time before completing the 10 sessions.
Children are not required to engage in the VR-delivered exposure practices if they refuse to do so. If your child does not wish to engage in the intervention, they may be withdrawn from the study and may still be eligible to receive treatment through CAMAT or through community referrals. If your child is not eligible for treatment services at CAMAT, we will provide you with referrals in the community.
